Watermelon "Sweet Siberian"
Watermelon "Sweet Siberian".
An heirloom mid-season variety originating from Siberia.
The fruits of this amazing old Siberian variety reach 40 cm in length and weigh up to 4 kg. Beneath the thin light green rind lies incredibly juicy, sweet yellow flesh. The seeds are small and brown.
Shape: Elongated.
Flesh color: Yellow.
Plant length: 100–200 cm.
In cultivation since 1898.
History: This legendary heirloom variety was first introduced by Peter Henderson in 1898. Later, it was carefully preserved and improved by Glenn Drowns, who offered it at the Seed Savers Exchange in 1987.
Agrotechnics.
Seeds for seedlings are sown indoors in late April. They germinate perfectly at a temperature of +20...25 °C; the first true leaf forms 3-5 days after emergence. Pots with seedlings should be placed on a bright, warm windowsill. It is highly recommended not to water the plants with cold water. A prolonged drop in temperature (below +16 °C) causes growth to stop and poses a serious risk to the heat-loving seedlings.
Watermelon seedlings are planted in greenhouses or hotbeds in late May to early June. When planting, under no circumstances should the root collar be buried deep. The distance between plants in a row is 30-40 cm, and between rows is 60-70 cm (assuming vertical trellising). At planting, water the holes abundantly with warm water and only slightly moisten the top layer of soil around the plants themselves.
